Building Our New Temple

Holy Resurrection is embarking on the construction of a new permanent temple on our property in Tacoma. This page is intended to share the vision, the facts, and the progress of this work with our parish family and with all who are interested in following along.

A Temple Designed for Orthodox Worship

We have been blessed to work with Andrew Gould, as the architect of this project. Andrew has designed numerous Orthodox temples across the world, including several recent projects such as Holy Cross Monastary in West Virginia. His work reflects a deep understanding of Orthodox tradition.

The next phase of the project involves working with a local architect who will assist with adapting the design to local zoning requirements, building codes, engineering standards, and permitting regulations specific to Pierce County and the State of Washington. This is a necessary and important step to ensure that the temple can be built faithfully, safely, and in full compliance with all civil requirements. From this point, the project enters the permitting and approvals process, and if all proceeds according to plan, we hope to break ground around the year 2030.

A dedicated Building Committee has been formed to oversee the project. This group is responsible for guiding the process thoughtfully, transparently, and responsibly, ensuring that the parish’s resources are used wisely and that decisions are made with both spiritual and practical discernment.

What the New Temple Will Include

The new temple has been designed to serve both our current needs and future growth. Highlights include:

  • Capacity for more than 300 people, allowing the parish to worship together comfortably

  • A wrap‑around covered procession area, making outdoor processions possible in all weather

  • Covered access to restrooms and a large multipurpose hall

  • A large multipurpose space for parish gatherings, education, and fellowship

From Humble Beginnings to a Growing Parish

Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church began in Wilkeson, Washington as Holy Trinity in Wilkeson, Washington. For a time, it was the only English speaking Orthodox Church in the Pacific Northwest. The congregration later purchased a modest property in Midland Tacoma, holding services in a renovated tractor barn and taking the name Holy Resurrection. Our beloved Holy Trinity temple still remains under our care, and services are still occasionally held there. By God’s grace, the parish has grown steadily over the years and today, we find ourselves bursting at the seams, with a vibrant and growing community that includes families, converts, children, and elders. This new temple is intended to stand for more than 500 years and be a home where Orthodox worship can flourish for generations to come.

How You Can Help

This project will only be possible through the prayers and generosity of the faithful. Every contribution, large or small, is deeply appreciated and directly supports this sacred work.

Looking Ahead

We are also preparing a promotional video, scheduled for release this spring, which will share more of the story, vision, and heart behind this project. We look forward to sharing it with you soon.

Please keep this project, the building committee, and all those involved in your prayers as we take these next steps together.

Building Prayer:

In the Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Incline Thine ear, O Lord, and grant all our petitions that are for our unity, salvation, and eternal life. And we ask for all the funds and everything necessary to build a Church Temple for Thy glory and as an aid for the salvation of all who come to worship with us. Establish Holy Resurrection firmly upon Thy Divine Word and grant us grateful hearts.

For holy art Thou always now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
