Children are the future of the church, and one of the most important ways to provide for that future is to engage children in an Orthodox Sunday school program to instill in them the beliefs of the church from an early age and to increase the depth of their belief and understanding of the church as they grow.

At Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church we provide a Sunday school program for children age 3 through 8th grade. With three classes we are able to diversify instruction, and with two teachers per class we work to support all children.

Preschool-Kindergarten

Our preschool-kindergarten class uses the Greek Archdiocese Curriculum: “God Loves Us.” Through stories, songs, hands on activities, and projects young children explore with their teachers how God’s love is manifest in their own lives..

First through Fourth Grade

Our primary school class, use curriculum written by the Orthodox Christian Education Commission (OCEC).  OCEC is a multi-jurisdiction organization that provides a comprehensive education in the teachings of the Orthodox church.  This class is currently using the second grade curriculum which teaches students about the Holy Sacraments of Baptism, Chrismation, Eucharist and Confession..

Fifth through Eighth Grades

Our intermediate class is studying “In the Beginning,” from the OCEC.  It is a study of the Old Testament: its people, places main events and literature.  One unit is devoted to exploring

Sunday school takes place most Sundays immediately after venerating the cross.  Sunday school teachers and students venerate ahead of other congregation members in order to start class as soon as possible. A light snack is provided in the classroom to tide students over until they dismiss and head to coffee hour.

Classrooms are located downstairs in the parish house and are labeled for each class. Parents of preschool children are asked to assist their children in using the restroom, if needed, before class.

  • Visiting children are welcome to attend classes.
  • Parents of children not participating in the Sunday School program are asked to keep their children off the back lawn and away from the church playground until classes have dismissed.

Snacks: We are always looking for people to help put together the snack trays for each class. The snack items are provided by the church as well as the number of students snack needs to be provided for.  Trays of the correct number of items need to be assembled before teachers and students arrive at the parish house.

Substitutes: Per OCA policy, each class must always have two teachers present in the classroom.  We need a robust list of substitutes to help when primary teachers are not able to be in class.  With two primary teachers per class, the role of the substitute is primarily to assist the teacher with the day’s lesson.  Becoming a substitute requires undergoing background and reference checks as well as completing the Darkness to Light program on recognizing and reporting childhood sexual abuse.
